What is Experiential Astrology?
I’m working on a more comprehensive treatment, which this topic deserves, but for now I’ll suggest that experiential astrology is the evocation of any aspect of astrology in a way that is experienced, embodied or enacted rather than say learned or discussed intellectually.
Barbara Schermer, author of Astrology Alive! the only book I know about experiential astrology, says this:
The main characteristic that defines experiential astrology is that its methods offer direct participation in the vital energies symbolized by the horoscope. By extracting the astrological chart from paper and bringing it to movement, art, theatre and dance, we not only allow the participation of the intellect, but also the involvement of the senses and emotions.
Astrodrama, a type of experiential astrology involving role play and reenactment of horoscopes, has its roots in the ancient world’s enactment of ritualistic theatre.
For over 1000 years Ancient Greek communities, for example, participated in the Eleusinian Mysteries where they reenacted the renewal myth of Persephone and Demeter which was astrologically linked to the disappearance and reappearance of Venus from evening star to morning star.
Contemporary astrodrama however owes its philosophical and therapeutic framework to the practice of psychodrama, family constellations and the human potential movement of the 70 and 80s.
Schermer lists Jung and his work in psychotherapy, Rudhyar and his work in humanistic astrology and Moreno and his work in psychodrama as foundational for the development of astrodrama and experiential astrology in general which she helped pioneered among others, through the 80-90s.

Here’s a great interview on the astrology podcast about experiential astrology with Jason Holley who is a current leader in the field and great teacher who I’m currently taking a course with on the Gods of Twilight. You can check out his work and the Hermes-Hestia Center for Living Astrologies at https://jasonholley.net.
Here’s an article from Barbara’s website about experiential astrology that was published in the Mountain Astrologer.
